Although many empirical studies have argued that the multidimensional Rasch model outperforms the unidimensional Rasch model, there is a continuing need for research that systematically examines the similarities and the substantial differences between these models. This paper used the Community Readiness and Participation Scale to empirically compare the unidimensional, consecutive unidimensional, and between-item multidimensional models in terms of item estimates, variable maps, scale reliability estimates, correlations between subscales, and estimates of person trait levels. The results show that the multidimensional model provided a higher correlation between the subscales, which aligns with most published findings. However, in general, the results suggest that these approaches do not provide substantially different estimates in terms of scale reliability, and item and person estimates.
