This presentation will draw on qualitative case study research that explores language practices within an early childhood (EC) dual language classroom in Hong Kong. The presentation will focus on two central themes: a) conditions for participation in this classroom, and b) how young learners within this classroom negotiate peer relationships through multilingual interactions (in Mandarin, Cantonese and English). This paper will showcase the extent to which an “open/flexible” language policy within this EC classroom context contributes to childrens' multilingual identities and learning.
