Multidimensional Model for Mentoring Faculty: A College-Wide Approach

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, Park Central Hotel New York, Floor: Ballroom Level, Forum

Abstract

A generational “changing of the guard” is affecting employment conditions in institutions of higher education (IHE). New faculty must learn to navigate changing requirements for tenure. Mentoring provides a means of personal, professional, and social support for faculty as they learn to be successful academics. Successful mentoring programs provide benefits to new faculty, mentor(s) and IHE. Different models exist, each with strengths and limitations. We reviewed models and their pros and cons, particularly for women and minority faculty. Our college, the second largest college at our IHE, mentors new faculty and addresses cultural competence and diversity of faculty and students. We also explain how and why we expanded our mentoring program from pre-tenured faculty to mid-career faculty. Results are shared.
