An Online Mind-Set Intervention in Secondary Vocational Education

Abstract

Enhancing students’ motivation is a challenge for secondary Vocational Education and Training (VET). Based on Dweck’s mindset theory, we used a quasi-experimental design, for a 10-weeks online psychological intervention on a population of 62 VET students. The aim of the intervention was to foster students’ mindset in order to promote their mathematical performance. Findings did not show a significant effect of the intervention. Nor on student’s mindset and neither on their results of mathematics. Nor did we find any significant relation between mindset and results on mathematics. This finding is in line with some other recent studies on mindset and the question will be posed whether mindset interventions are effective for more advanced students.
