The Development and Validation of a 21st-Century Skills Instrument: Measuring Secondary School Students' Skills

Fri, April 13, 12:00 to 1:30pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

Thirty-seven items were developed based on well-established frameworks for the 21st century learning (e.g., P21, enGauge) to measure high school students’ perceptions of their own 21st century skills. The sample was drawn from the pool of participants for an international science Olympiad: 2017 I-SWEEEP. Factor analysis and reliability analysis suggested 4 main constructs, which are aligned with initial framework: learning and innovation skills, life and career skills, interdisciplinary themes, and information, media, and technology skills. Three sub-constructs were regrouped to achieve the best results: (a) collaboration was moved from learning and innovation skills to life and career skills; and (b) initiative and self-direction and leadership and responsibility skills were moved from life and career skills to learning and innovation skills.
