The Development of Narrative Story Structure Among Young Spanish-English Dual Language Learners

Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

This exploratory study investigates the longitudinal oral language development from kindergarten to second grade among Spanish-English bilingual children. Oral narrative assessments were conducted with heritage Spanish speakers enrolled in a dual language immersion program (N = 14), and retells were transcribed and coded using the Narrative Scoring Scheme (NSS) to assess discourse-level skills (Heilmann et al., 2010). By second grade, children showed significantly higher performance on overall NSS performance in English only, as well as significant improvement in specific discourse elements. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses will be presented.
