This study examined how profiles of intrinsic, extrinsic, and social motivations may affect student engagement, academic outcomes, and the relation between these factors. Person-centered approach revealed six motivational profiles including very low motivation, low intrinsic motivation, mid-low motivation, mid-level motivation, high overall motivation, and high intrinsic/low extrinsic motivation groups. Three patterns of relationship among engagement and GPA were identified. For the two low motivation groups, GPA was not influenced by neither cognitive or social engagement; for the two mid-level motivation groups, GPA was influenced by both types of engagement directly and social engagement indirectly; for the two high motivation groups, GPA was only indirectly influenced by social engagement through the mediation effect of cognitive engagement.
