The Role of Siblings and Social Media as a Bridge Between College, Community, and Home for Latinx First-Generation College Students

Fri, April 13, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Eighth Floor, Gallery 8

Abstract

Based on in-depth iterative interviews with families of Latinx first-generation students and using Community Cultural Wealth framework, we seek to identify and understand the mechanisms through which families support students who are university students. Online communication between college students and siblings was found to be key to the retention of college students while demystifying what it means to be a college student for siblings, family members and friends. Furthermore, through the use of social media, Latinx families gain insights into the educational experiences of students in the United States.
