Research universities in the worldwide have undertaken numerous managerial practices and technologies to improve their effectiveness and efficiency, which has aggravated the conflict between research and teaching. Despite the increasingly practical demand for Chinese research universities to enhance these links, little research has investigated the research-teaching nexus in a Chinese context. Drawing on in-depth interviews and classroom observations with 14 academics from the applied sciences, this case study provides empirical evidence of research-teaching nexus in the context of Chinese research universities by examining the multi-layered factors of the individual, institutional and organisational levels, emphasising the dilemmas of how to effectively integrate research and teaching.
