The study seeks to determine if teacher perception of accountability and assessment policies in the years post-NCLB implementation are related to teacher turnover. Using the NCES Teacher Follow-up Survey, this study tests the relationship of teacher perception of de-professionalization and demoralization to realized turnover in two groups of teachers, those who viewed accountability policies as relevant to their decision to turnover and those who did not. The authors found that there is a significant relationship between teacher demoralization and turnover in teachers who negatively view accountability policy, and this relationship is not significant in teachers who did not have a negative perception of accountability policy. Increased turnover related to accountability policy may be counterproductive to the espoused goals of NCLB.
