In 21st century higher education (HE), the increasing diversity of students and the internationalization of study programs call for transparent and valid information on students’ academic acquired knowledge and skills. As several conceptual and methodological challenges arise from the immense complexity of HE, there is still a substantial research gap on assessment practices in HE. This paper discusses how results of the research program “Modeling and Measuring Competencies in HE” (KoKoHs) contribute to the existing research gap on appropriate methods for assessing students’ academic achievement. The presented approaches on objective achievement diagnosis in HE contribute to establishing more transparency and validity at the international level, and are highly relevant to international research on teaching and learning in 21st Century HE.
