Early Schooling for Children With Disabilities: The Role of Teacher Qualifications and Kindergarten Transition

Sat, April 14, 4:05 to 5:35pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

Positive early childhood education experiences and kindergarten readiness are important for all children’s development. This period is particularly critical for children with disabilities who are not only transitioning to formal schooling but also new special education services. Using secondary data from the Pre-Elementary Education Longitudinal Study, this study examines whether receiving instruction from qualified early childhood special education teachers and supportive kindergarten transition practices contribute to the developmental trajectories of children with disabilities. Results indicate that outcomes tend to be lower for children taught by teachers with certificates in special education and for children who receive high-intensity transition practices. The findings, however, may reflect a sorting process where children with greater need receive more assistance.
