Computing fields are the only discipline to show a decline in women’s representation, moving from 35% in 1990 to 26% of the field in 2013 (Corbett & Hill, 2015). Women and girls remain underrepresented in computing fields because of their perceived lack of sense of fit with the stereotypes associated with computing and computer science. This study is one of only a few to investigate the impacts of a one-week all-girls summer coding camp through a coding identity framework. The results highlighted how creating a space where girls feel safe to make mistakes and are encouraged to proudly discuss their talents and skills improves the quality of ideas and development of skills.
