Beginning in Fall 2014, a new set of rules took effect in Florida regarding who is required to take Developmental Education (DE). Since the fall of 2014, many students have the option of bypassing DE regardless of their prior academic preparation and enrolling directly in gateway (introductory college-level) courses. While the most common gateway math course (Intermediate Algebra) can be used to fulfill major requirements for STEM-related majors, there are a number of other gateway math course options that fulfill major requirements for non-STEM majors. The purpose of this paper is to better understand the (STEM vs. non-STEM) gateway math enrollment patterns and course passing rates among underprepared students.
