Abstract

This exploratory literature review considers South Asian (SA) youth schooling experiences within the U.S., U.K., and Canada. In this review, I evaluate current research on the influence of teacher, peer, familial, and ethnic/non-ethnic community members’ perceptions on adolescent SA schooling experiences and identify methodological and theoretical considerations for future research. I define perception and systemic racism and sift study findings through these concepts to reframe this population beyond the model minority stereotype in education research, practice, and policy. This paper presents findings from 39 peer-reviewed studies in total. Two important findings include a lack of analysis on the influence of structural racism in schooling policy and practice and differences in perceptions within countries based on study samples.
