(Hypo)Criticism, Mocking, and Misrepresentation: Responses to Calls to Improve the Climate for Women in STEM

Abstract

In this critical discourse analysis, I identified the linguistic tools and discourses used in the negative articles, blog posts, discussion forums, and tweets published in response to a scholarly article published on women and STEM. In this study, I sought to extend the literature on new media tactics that inspire aggressive rhetoric, such as trolling, and attempt to (often successfully) silence those advocating for women.
