The Indexical Nature of Inquiry-Based Classroom Talk: The Role of Technology Integration

Mon, April 16, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Third Floor, Room 3.04-3.05

Abstract

This study explored how 5th-grade teachers and students use indexical expressions (verbal expressions conveying certainty or tentativeness) in whole-class discussions in four elementary classrooms. The treatment classes received instruction on geographic information system (GIS)-related topics, whereas the control classes received typical social studies lessons. Results of a sequential analysis of interactional patterns revealed that the integration of advanced technology was associated with relatively more use of indexical expressions by teachers and students, higher occurrence of student talk, and higher impact of student language on teacher language in the degree of absoluteness and tentativeness. Moreover, whereas the teachers mirrored student use of indexical expressions in treatment classes, network of indexical impact in control classes was limited to student-student exchanges only.
