Can a Teacher Leadership Program Impact Student Academic Outcomes?

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of a Teacher Leadership (TL) program on student academic achievement measured by the state standard test score and state-calculated student growth percentile in English and mathematics. The TL program was designed and implemented in a large public school district in the Western United States region where three cohorts of schools started implementing the program in 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16, respectively. A rigorous analytic approach, comparative interrupted time series, was used during the analysis. The results show overall, no impact was found with the exception of a positive impact on mathematics achievement for students in K–8 schools after 3-year program implementation. The implications were discussed in light of the results.
