Social and Psychological Benefits of Hip-Hop Dance: Autonomy and Relatedness Among High School Dance Teams

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Eighth Floor, Manhattan Ballroom

Abstract

Within the field of hip hop studies, dance is often considered through the lens of physical fitness or the multi-cultural evolution of dance itself. Hip hop dance is a highly accessible aspect of the broader culture, particularly to high school aged youth, through participation in dance teams and clubs. Using social network theory, self-determination theory, and an analysis of collaborative culture, we explore the ways in which youth connect and engage with one another within the creative culture of hip hop dance. These psycho-social analyses shed further light on this form of dance and self-expression, personal autonomy and the intersections between self and other within a group hip hop environment.
