A Comparison of Teachers Who Stayed, Moved, and Left During the 2012–2013 School Year

Tue, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Empire Ballroom East

Abstract

This study investigated whether there were differences in teachers’ beliefs and attitudes during the 2011-2012 school year based on their status as stayers, movers, and leavers one year later. This study contributed to our understanding of how beliefs relate to turnover by utilizing the 2011-2012 Schools and Staffing Survey Teacher Questionnaire and 2012-2013 Teacher Follow-Up Survey. The sample included 1,230 full-time, non-charter public school teachers matched across both surveys. This included 710 stayers, 260 movers, and 260 leavers. Results indicated that there were no differences between the three groups on any of the variables, nor did variables differentially predict moving or leaving. Post hoc exploratory analyses were conducted to examine the possible role of cultural context in shaping teachers’ beliefs.
