Pipelines of Privilege or the Disruption of "Determination": Teacher Trajectories and the Habitus

Abstract

This conference paper draws on data from a multi-case study of teachers and their movement through schooling institutions as students, pre-service teachers and early-career practitioners. The study is situated within the highly differentiated market system of NSW, Australia, which boasts a wide range of school types which typically have contrasting cultural, religious, and socio-educational enrolments. Through a small, rich set of cases I argue that experiences with and within schooling institutions involve key formative factors in understanding teachers’ choice of workplace within the increasingly diversified educational settings manifesting in market systems across the globe. The resulting patterns in teachers’ choices are argued to potentially lead to skewed understandings of schools, students and teaching.
