Abstract

Family literacy refers to parents and their children engaging in literacy practices in a natural way during their daily routines. Results of studies on family literacy programs and their effects on young children warranted a meta-analysis. This meta-analysis examined the effects of family literacy on children’s literacy development. Studies were selected based on established criteria. Thirty recent studies of children whose ages ranged from two to six years of age met the selection criteria. Findings demonstrated significant results on the literacy development of those children who engaged in family literacy programs. Results also supported the need for further research on how family literacy programs are conducted by parents and children and how activities are integrated into existing family literacy practices.
