Sun, April 15, 2:45 to 4:15pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Eighth Floor, Manhattan Ballroom

Abstract

Iterative mixed methods research is especially useful in a range of applications including, but not limited to, classroom and school-wide interventions, policy analysis, and when seeking grant applications. Iterative research, in particular, is most applicable when the purpose is to solve localized, practical problems. This paper defines iterative research and presents a 1.4 million dollar federally funded project. Qualitative data including semi-structured interviews, conversations at team meetings, classroom reflections concerning, and interviews of professional development participants. Quantitative data included student records, yearly writing proficiency tests and analysis of student writing samples. Findings were positive. Student writing performance improved but may have been for various reasons. Regardless, iterative research relies upon self-reflective inquiry carried out to improve teacher and student performance.
