Situated in an urban high school in the southeast United States that makes extensive use of technology-mediated learning in both COT (Classrooms of Tomorrow) and 1:1 (laptop) classrooms, we conducted a quasi-experimental, mixed-methods study to determine if classroom technology resources, teacher and student use of technology, and teacher disposition toward technology influenced student achievement on benchmark assessments, end-of-grade assessments, and overall course grade. Findings indicate significant differences between COT and 1:1 classrooms. The flexibility of the COT classroom creates a smart learning environment that positively affects student achievement, engagement, and content learning as compared to more individualized technology applications supported by 1:1 initiatives.
