This study aims to explore the effect of different emotional design features in multimedia on students’ positive emotions, mental effort and learning achievements. For Neutral Design (ND) only grayscale coloring, for Colorful Design (CD) attention grabbing colors, for Emotional Design (ED) expressive facial expressions, for Emotional Design and Sound Effects (EDSE) interesting sound effects were used respectively. We measured positive emotions through Emwave emotion detection device. Results indicated that positive emotions generally tended to increase as the amount of emotional design increased. While CD group exerted more mental effort than ND, EDSE group invested less mental effort than CD. In addition, CD group outperformed ND in terms of recall scores. Non-significant transfer scores were observed across groups.
