Retention in STEM is low because many students struggle. A research-based, adaptive online learning courseware was developed. The purpose of this courseware is to provide additional support for students in their physics coursework and help with STEM retention. Specifically, this study examines the relationship between use of the adaptive online courseware for homework assignments and student achievement in a physics course for two semesters. HLM analysis was used to address student confounding factors and clustering between the semesters. Two outcomes were examined, exam average and Force Concept Inventory gain scores. Results showed that performance in the online courseware assignments was significantly related to the two outcome measures, giving preliminary evidence that the online learning courseware is related to student achievement.
