Cultural Pluralism in Educational Leadership Practices

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Park Central Hotel New York, Floor: Ballroom Level, Forum

Abstract

The rise of globalization and increased immigration in Canada and specifically, Ontario, have led to the expansion of equity, inclusion and multiculturalism policies and practices in education. This study explores whether and how cultural pluralism is incorporated into the leadership practices of educational leaders at the classroom, school leadership and government levels in Ontario. Through qualitative interviews conducted with an elementary school teacher, principal and an Assistant Deputy Minister from the Ontario Ministry of Education, this study concludes that while the benefits of adopting principles of pluralism in educational leadership are understood and valued, many challenges exist in effectively incorporating pluralism in the leadership practices of educational professionals.
