This study explores how the design of software for multi-touch tables influences collaborative problem solving for middle school students working with data. Standards indicate that data literacy is an important component in math and science, but research shows it is difficult for students to work with. This suggests a need to understand how technology and design effect student’s abilities when using multiples sets of data. This paper presents on the second phase of a design based research project that focuses on data based discussions during a collaborative activity using the Food for Thought software. We aim to examine how the design influences group discussions and suggest guidelines for future iterations of the software, as well as others like it.
