Educator Perceptions of Student Learning Objectives in Evaluating Teacher Effectiveness

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate educators’ perceptions of SLOs, compare their perceptions of SLOs and observational rubrics, and explore predictors of educators’ perceptions of SLOs. Participants included 488 educators from 39 schools in 10 districts in a southeastern state in the United States. The survey results indicated that administrators had more positive perceptions of SLOs than teachers, educators generally had more positive perceptions of SLOs than observational rubrics, and educators’ experience using SLOs and their perceptions of observational rubrics significantly predicted their perceptions of SLOs. The findings are significant in that they could provide important information to improve the educator evaluation system, inform teacher professional development and instructional practice, and promote student learning.
