Examining an Adolescent Writer's Networked Audience Practices Across Contexts: Insights From a Longitudinal Case Study

Mon, April 16, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Fourth Floor, Room 4.02-4.03

Abstract

While the field knows more about audience interactions in specific online spaces, such as Fanfiction.net (e.g., Black, 2008), or on social media (e.g., boyd, 2014), less is known about adolescents’ engagement with audiences across multiple networked spaces. Inspired by Compton-Lilly’s (2014) call for longer views of writers’ development, this study examines an author’s interactions with various networked audiences as her interests and purposes for writing changed over time. This paper seeks answers to this question: How does an adolescent writer’s engagement with online audiences change and/or persist over time?
