In this paper, I describe a research with walking as storying in, through, and as movement. My project entitled StoryWalks is a collaborative, participatory walking project that asks participants to create walking, personalized tours of San Jose Japantown, California (U.S.). Japantown is a historic neighborhood profoundly affected by the illegal incarceration and internment of Japanese Americans during World War II (pre-Presidential executive order 9066) and which has now become a site of memorialization as well as redevelopment for new generations of Japanese Americans and other ethnic communities. It has also been historically comprised of large Chinese American and Filipino American communities and is seeing new ethnic enclaves (e.g., Ethiopian) and retail startups by millennial Japanese Americans.
