Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

Both parent involvement and self-regulated learning are significant predictors for students’ study success. However, research on parent involvement in middle school and stimulation of self-regulated learning at home is scarce. Especially, the role of parents for middle school students’ self-regulated learning remains under investigated. Therefore, the present study explores perceptions of middle school students and their parents on parental practices that stimulate self-regulated learning using semi-structured interviews with eighteen families. The results show parents are still highly involved in their youngsters’ education. Parents stimulate self-regulated learning on multiple levels, by creating an emotional responsive home environment that stimulates youngsters’ motivation and by fostering several learning strategies. Overall, this study underpins the importance of parents’ educational involvement even in middle school.
