Abstract

The present study aims to investigate: 1) the usefulness of the ICALT observation instrument measuring teaching behavior in the South Korean secondary education context, and 2) the general level of Korean teachers’ teaching behavior. A total of 375 Korean secondary school teachers in three provinces were observed by trained observers using a previously validated observation instrument. IRT was used to analyze the data. Results show that: 1) the Korean ICALT instrument is reliable and valid for use in the South Korean context, 2) Teaching behavior shows a progression continuum ranging from simple to complex, 3). The majority of teachers’ teaching behavior corresponds on average with more basic and intermediate teaching skills and less often with complex skills.
