Influencing Education Policy Through State-Level Media and Public Opinion: Knowledge Brokering Organizations in New York State

Mon, April 16, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Second Floor, Clinton Suite

Abstract

Political battles are raging at the state level where Republican agendas are in control of governorships and state legislatures. In education, this is often a battle over the role of “the public” and public schooling and over public opinion in states and municipalities where voters still access their local media. In a case study of the state of New York, Access World News data base and other online resources were used to examine levels of access to media, which education policies are promoted, and which political and discursive strategies are used by Knowledge Brokering Organizations. With some exceptions, results show greater access by traditional Knowledge Brokers (business, unions, etc.) than grassroots organizations and think tanks.
