Enhancing English Language Development Instruction Through Teacher Inquiry and Lesson Study

Abstract

As many states adopt new English proficiency standards to align with Common Core State Standards, a demand for teacher professional development has emerged. This paper explores one California district’s efforts to improve English Language Development (ELD) instruction through weekly teacher inquiry cycles and lesson study activities. The paper discusses findings as they relate to teachers’ improved understanding of new ELD standards, collaboration across grade levels, and planning of Designated ELD lessons.
