Time, Access, Context, and Beliefs: A Survey of Electronic Media in Early Childhood Settings

Sat, April 14, 8:15 to 9:45am, Crown Plaza Times Square, Floor: Lobby Level, Act III-IV Room

Abstract

Electronic media are ever-present, yet less is known about media in early childhood settings. This two-part survey study examines teachers’ beliefs, access to and use of media in settings across one Midwestern state. One set of educators reported their beliefs regarding media, and another set completed global estimate items and a time use diary. Nearly all had access to multiple devices, and media were used during 21% of the hours within a day, often to play music. The greatest percentage of media time occurred during the early afternoon, coinciding with nap and lunch routines. Further analyses will examine media beliefs. Although educators should continue to align with recommendations, attention is needed about media’s potential to support teaching and early learning.
