Against the existing research about how punitive discipline practices negatively affect Black males, little is acknowledged about how relationships with onsite educators affect their socio-academic experiences. Preceding literatures show how respective relationships with onsite educators can be for Black male students. This phenomenological praxis research study used three chronological reflective focus groups, and one-on-one dialogic follow-ups to investigate the socio-academic experiences of Black adolescent male students at a public high school. Analysis revealed maintaining personal relationships, keeping it 100, and cultural relevancy are important factors that positively affect the socio-academic experiences of Black male students. My responsibility is to use findings from this study to enhance educators’ teaching practices and discipline approaches when working with Black male scholars.
