Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Among Youth With and Without Hearing Loss: Contribution of Family Variables

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

The current study examined the career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) of young adults with and without hearing loss (HL) and the contribution of career-related family support and expectations to this type of self-efficacy. Participants were 110 young adults: 50 with HL and 60 with typical hearing. They completed the CDMSE Short Form, the Family Influence Scale, and a background questionnaire. No significant differences were found between the two study groups in CDMSE. However, participants with HL reported lower levels of financial support from their families and higher levels of family expectations. In addition, family support was a significant predictor of CDMSE only among participants with typical hearing. Implications for theory and research are discussed.
