How Teachers Use Pinterest: Similarities and Differences in Teachers' Uses of Pinterest for Instructional Planning

Sat, April 14, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Eighth Floor, Gallery 8

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates how pre-service and in-service teachers use Pinterest. Based on a survey of 180 pre- and in-service teachers, we find that teachers use Pinterest as a means of “idea gathering” to serve as a jumping off point for more focused lesson planning. As a result, the majority of teachers surveyed indicated they made substantial adaptations to resources found on Pinterest, most often through simplification or extension. Pre-service and in-service teachers did use Pinterest slightly differently, however. Pre-service teachers’ responses were overall less nuanced than in-service teachers, many of whom indicated specific academic uses and extensions of Pinterest resources.
