Effects of the New Teaching Career Law in Chile: Perspectives From School Principals

Abstract

In the Chilean educational context, emerges a new system of professional teacher development called “New Teaching Career Law”. The present study aims to investigate, from the perspective of school principals, the new policy`s impact. This study employed mixed method research. First, the concept mapping technique was implemented. Next, a survey was created based on the identified clusters from concept mapping. The survey was then answered by (N=173) school principals. The results of this study suggest that, from their perspective, the main elements in evaluating a teacher`s performance, in regards to sorting, are: experience, continuous training and results of the teacher evaluation portfolio. This study seeks to aid the policy makers prediction of the effects the law implementation may carry.
