Taking the Lead With Lesson Study: Preservice Minority Teachers' Negotiation of Identity and Sociomathematical Authority

Abstract

This study investigates how minority pre-service teachers (PST) become effective mathematics teachers with a strong preparation for teaching mathematics in elementary school using lesson study framework. The findings suggest that by analyzing children’s mathematics understanding, their work, and re-teaching lessons and applying teaching strategies (learned in the math method course) provide pre-service teachers with in-depth knowledge of how the subject matter they teach is connected to children's mathematical thinking.
