Supporting Success for First-Generation Pell Grant–Eligible Community College Students Through Targeted Advising Services

Mon, April 16, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Crown Plaza Times Square, Floor: Fifth Floor, Room 509/510

Abstract

Student success, retention, and graduation rates are concerns for community college instructors and administrators in North Carolina. To improve these student outcomes, Wake Technical Community College (WTCC) implemented targeted advising services to enable first-generation college students eligible for Pell grant funding to succeed in foundational undergraduate courses. Targeted advising includes success coaching, early intervention for struggling students, and auxiliary workshops. Because these services are tied to the Success through Early Engagement and Gateway Empirical Redesign (SEEGER) initiative, an evaluation team was contracted to assess the impact of targeted advising. This paper provides a framework for implementing and evaluating this novel approach to targeted advising based on the evaluation of the initiative.
