Stakeholders in EdTech Decision Making: Involving End Users in the Process

Abstract

We investigated how stakeholders are involved in decisions about acquiring and using educational technology to support teaching and learning in higher education. While previous literature investigates factors that predict end user technology adoption, little is known about whether and how they are involved in institutional decisions about acquiring technology solutions, or how their involvement affects the success of technology implementation. Findings from 41 interviews of decision-makers in higher education show that faculty and students, the end users, are considered key stakeholders in educational technology acquisitions. Their input is often sought through surveys and user testing. However, they are rarely given a strong voice in the decision-making process which may lead to suboptimal implementation and failure to improve student outcomes.
