A nuanced approach to the cultivation of teacher expertise is needed in the current policy climate, where the larger discourse about teacher effectiveness has served to diminish teacher agency and undermine teacher professionalism. Towards this end, in our poster session we offer a typology and illustrative accounts of how certain types of teacher discourse moves in an interactive, think-aloud-based writing assessment prompt dialogues between teachers and students that lead to either (1) teachers' new understandings about the nature of students' writing challenges, or (2) breakthroughs in students' writing processes, or both. We will discuss implications of this typology for teacher self-reflection and professional development
