Against Success? How Dominant Narratives of College Student Success Can Perpetuate Inequity in Higher Education

Mon, April 16, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fourth Floor, Wilder

Abstract

This paper explores how dominant narratives of college student success can create inequitable environments for minoritized students. Using a qualitative case study design informed by ethnographic methods, I show how success gets discursively constructed at one institution to produce inequity and how minoritized students navigate this environment.
