Social Justice Leadership Through Teacher Hiring

Tue, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Trianon Ballroom

Abstract

This paper reports on case study research with one principal who deliberately approaches teacher hiring in ways that are intended to advance social justice. Drawn from a larger multisite study, this single case illustrates (a) the principal’s approach to school personnel administration to promote social justice, including the processes, policies, and practices regarding teacher recruitment and selection and (b) the meanings the principal attaches to this approach and its perceived impact. Since limited empirical evidence exists to explain how and why principals leverage human resources in schools to advance social justice, and aligning with other scholars who argue that documenting concrete examples is critical, this instrumental case was used to generate descriptive assertions and provoke further inquiry.
