Reducing Bully Victimization in Schools in China Through Social Emotional Learning: The Mediation Role of Social Emotional Competence

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, Crown Plaza Times Square, Floor: Lobby Level, Act III-IV Room

Abstract

Bullying in schools is a pervasive problem and has been given a great deal of attention in China now. This study examined the prevalence of bully victimization in primary schools, and investigated the relationship between Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and bully victimization. 2,137 third to fifth Grades students participated the study. It revealed that 86.1% of participants reported being a victim of bullying behavior in the past six months, and were less social emotional competent compared with non-involved peers. It also found the SEL had a negative correlation with bully victimization, while students’ social emotional competencies partially mediated the relation between SEL and bully victimization. Implications for research and practice towards a bully-free school in China through SEL are discussed.
