Community-Based Service-Learning in Higher Education Language Learning Contexts: A Review of the Literature

Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 9:45am, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Fourth Floor, Room 4.11

Abstract

This paper provides a review of the literature on community-based service learning (CBSL) programs in foreign language education (FLE) settings in higher-education. Analysis of the literature indicated that about half of these articles used rigorous methodology, with qualitative or mixed methods on student perceptions as the most common. Some articles did not detail methodology, but provided program descriptions or practical suggestions. In general, findings of the literature suggest positive outcomes of CBSL in student learning and changes in attitudes and perceptions. However, most findings are limited to small-scale studies with few longitudinal studies or quasi-experimental designs. In an era of increasing CBSL programs, this review provides a source for research-based practices and serves as a launching pad for future research.
