Effectiveness of Hybrid MOOCs: A Meta-Analysis From Research Design Perspectives

Tue, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Metropolitan East Room

Abstract

The development of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) results in the appearance of Hybrid MOOC (HMOOC), which is a new online learning environment. Previous studies introduced and analyzed HMOOC in different design cases. However, few studies examined the influence of HMOOC on students’ learning performance. In this study we used a meta-analysis technique to fill the gap. First, we examined the overall effectiveness of HMOOC on students’ learning performance in six studies. Second, we explained the differences of the studies in terms of three research design features: comparison type, outcome type and sample size. The results suggest that HMOOC makes significant effects on students’ learning performance.
