The purpose of the study was to investigate a new approach, 3D Embodied Animations, to Chinese character learning (CCL) for beginning learners of Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL). The study adopted a between-subjects experimental design to examine the effectiveness of four groups: Traditional Learning (TL), Animation Learning (AL), Embodied Animation Learning (EAL) and 3D Embodied Animation Learning (3D). Forty adults were randomly assigned to one of the groups. The results indicated that the 3D group outperformed the other groups in the total recall number of learned characters and the post-test scores. The EAL group outperformed the AL and TL groups. Given the positive results, this empirical study recommends the use of 3D to CCL for beginning learners of CFL.
